Cooling Strategy

Almost everything in your server room is going to give off heat, and each thing is going to give off a varied amount of that heat. That means you’re going to have various cooling demands throughout your computer room. When you’re deciding which system to install, be sure and evaluate your total demands together with the available cooling systems and methods so that you can ensure the overall safety of each piece of equipment, as well as the entire environment and personnel.

New Power Technology

Keep an eye out for new and improved types of power technology – it’s constantly being improved. You’ll find that there are quite a few choices for supplying your servers with power. You may want to consider rack mount power strips, remote power products, three-phase power technologies, and, of course, standard power strips. Your decision will depend on a quite a few different factors: the amount of space you’ve got in and around your server room, the number of necessary outlets you’ll need, each piece of equipment’s requirements, and redundancy requirements, which you will probably want to implement now or in the future.

Security Strategy

Most likely one of the most important things within your company, as with most companies, is security. As you work through the design process for your server room, you’ll want to ensure that you include plans and/or changes you make in the business strategy for the company.

In order to secure your valuable information, you’ll probably want to consider server racks with lockable doors. You may also want to minimize personnel access to the computers in the server room and use security cameras or some other monitoring system.

There are a lot of other things that can also potentially cause damage to your server room and hardware: temperature changes, electrical issues, water leaks, etc. Keeping these things in mind and adding additional security features to your room will enable you to act quickly to take care of these issues and protect your valuable equipment.

Rack Size

Probably the most logical place to start is your server racks. You’ll want to make sure you get enough racks now to house all of your present equipment as well as your future equipment. Basically, if you ever plan on expanding in the future (and you surely will), you’ll need the extra space right now. Plan enough space in your room to move your servers in and out and maneuver them around. Ensure that you have enough room between equipment for safety purposes as well. And when you install them, follow the instructions carefully so that you’ll have less probably in the future.
